Regional unemployment rates continue to slide

Weld County in September saw its unemployment rate cut nearly in half versus the same month a year ago, down to 3.8 percent.

That’s according to the latest figures released from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment on Tuesday.

All four counties in the region – Boulder, Broomfield, Larimer and Weld – enjoyed unemployment of less than 4 percent in September. Boulder’s came in at 3.1 percent, Larimer at 3.2 and Broomfield at 3.7. But it was Weld that saw the greatest improvement.

Weld County’s non-seasonally adjusted rate was down from 4.7 percent in August and 6.5 percent in September of last year. The last time Weld’s rate was lower was in May of 2007 at 3.6 percent. But the county hadn’t seen September unemployment so low since 2001 when its rate was 3.4 percent.

The historical perspective was similar elsewhere. Boulder and Larimer counties hadn’t seen rates so low since 2007. But they’d not enjoyed such strong September unemployment rates since 2000 when each county’s figure came in at 2.4 percent.

Broomfield’s unemployment rate was its lowest since Dec. 2007, the same year its September jobless rate last hit 3.7 percent.

The strong figures came as statewide the unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, Colorado’s lowest since June of 2008. That was down 1.9 percentage points from a year ago.

Nationally, unemployment was down from 7.2 percent in September of 2013 to 5.9 percent this year.

Colorado saw its number of nonfarm payroll jobs increase by 14,600 in the month, with private sector jobs increasing 14,700 and government jobs decreasing by 100. The largest gains were in leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, and financial activities, with no private sectors seeing month-over-month declines.
