Quick Left set to give back to startup community

BOULDER – Local web and mobile software development firm Quick Left Inc. is putting its own twist on giving back to the local startup community that has helped it flourish.

Quick Left’s “Adopt a Startup” competition will see one pre-Series A startup win a month’s worth of custom software development from a pair of Quick Left developers. In exchange, Quick Left will receive a convertible note worth the value of the development, or $64,000.

Startups have until Dec. 14 to apply for the competition . A winner will be chosen shortly thereafter, with work to begin Jan. 5. Startups in the Boulder/Denver/Fort Collins and Portland/Seattle areas are eligible to apply.

Exploring & expressing grief

Support groups and events, as well as creative therapies and professional counseling, are all ways in which Pathways supports individuals dealing with grief and loss.

“It’s our way of contributing to the eco-system that has helped us grow in each of these markets,” Quick Left’s chief executive Matt Work said. “At the same time, an equity position will give us some upside if we help make something great. It is exciting for our team to make a contribution to something new.”

Founded in 2010, Quick Left has grown from $1.1 million in revenue its first year to $3.5 million in 2013. Earlier this year, Boulder-based Quick Left merged with San Francisco-based Sprintly, with the two now having a Portland, Ore. office and keeping the Quick Left name.

As the company has grown, it has worked with larger and larger companies, director of marketing Rachel Scott said. At the same time, contract development is no inexpensive proposition for new startups before they’ve gotten a big infusion of funding like a Series A round.

Scott said Quick Left has given to the startup community in other ways in the past like mentoring with various tech accelerators or getting involved with coder schools. But Scott said the company wanted to find a new and creative way to give back.

In the two days since the launch of Adopt a Startup, 17 companies have applied.

“We didn’t know how this was going to be received,” Scott said. “It’s being very well received right now, so we definitely want to do this again,” noting that Quick Left anticipates making Adopt a Startup an annual program.

The contest is also a way for Quick Left to highlight some new packages it is creating specifically for startups.

“If they don’t win this particular competition, it doesn’t mean we can’t help them with their product,” Scott said.
