Pot execs form trade association to standardize potency testing

BOULDER — The executives of Sage Analytics have formed the Green Standard Working Group, a marijuana industry trade association created to establish standardized analytical methods for potency testing.

The GSWG provides an open forum for industry leaders to work together with the intent of nominating and implementing testing protocols. This will lead to better, more consistent test results — giving powerful and accurate information to everyone in the cannabis eco-sphere, including growers, MIP producers, dispensary operators, regulators and consumers.

Randall Kruep, founder and chief executive of Boulder-based Sage Analytics, along with the company’s general manager, Matt Kaplan, founded the group. Sage Analytics is about to launch a cannabis potency tester called the Luminary Profiler that can measure the content of three key ingredients in pot.

“The goal is to bring together the ‘best and the brightest’ to work together, and not only provide our industry with needed guidelines, but to also demonstrate to policy makers and voters that the cannabis industry can operate in a responsible and accountable manner,” Kaplan said, founding member of the trade association and general manager of Boulder-based Sage Analytics, a company that has developed a device to measure the percentage of active ingredients in pot.

The group’s members will identify an optimal set of analytical methods so that a standard set of protocols can be established and published for reliance by the industry and its regulators.  The mission is for the efficiency, consistency of results, and veracity of testing labs to be vastly improved — not only here in America, but all over the world, Kaplan said.

The group also will serve as a voice for cannabis researchers and testing facilities to regulators and other entities with authority over the industry. The association helps assure that future developments, regulations and legalizations of marijuana will include input from leaders in cannabis research and testing.

“Our industry will only continue to grow if we as industry leaders can demonstrate that we have built self-governing systems and standards that assure accountability and product consistency, while providing protection to consumers,” Kaplan said.
