The Boulder firm has signed a three-year contract with the PGA Tour to build the mobile app, which will show golfers’ locations and score data in real time at every event on the tour, said Jeff Schott, president of EarthvisionZ. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed between EarthvisionZ and the professional golfers’ tour based in Ponta Vedra Beach, Florida.
“From anywhere in the world, you’ll be able to see what ball they’re playing,” Schott said. “You can navigate around and see your favorite players.”
The mobile app is scheduled to go “live” at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Kapalua, Hawaii, Jan. 6-13, Schott said. As many as 40,000 people are expected to attend each of the 38 tour events this year, said Scott Gutterman, senior director of operations for PGA Tour Digital.
“It gives fans information to help them enjoy the events. We expect it to result in more movement around a course. (You’ll ask), ‘Where is Tiger right now?’ or ‘I’m watching Phil (Mickelson) right now’ and pull up the application,” Gutterman said.
The PGA Tour mobile app uses maps from the golf courses, volunteers who watch the players on the courses, information from Google, and satellite imagery. Volunteers In addition to being able to follow the players, you can also use the application to show the closest concession stand to where you’re standing and similar information, Schott said. PGA Tour officials plan to add sponsorships around various pieces of the mobile app, Gutterman said.
The EarthVisionZ software platform – called WorldEngine – has driven more than $1 million in sales for the company in the past six months, Schott said. The company now has created about 40 websites for various clients using the proprietary platform. The software originally was developed for a U.S. Air Force defense contract that ran from 2001 to 2008, Schott said.
