OtterBox donates $1.3 million to museum, names Digital Dome

FORT COLLINS – Protective-case manufacturer OtterBox has made a $1.3 million donation to the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery, adding its name to the museum’s Digital Dome.

The OtterBox Digital Dome Theater is a 360-degree “immersive” theater that allows viewers to take in shows that can take them to redwood forests or to volcanoes on the surface of Mars.

The dome is a crown jewel of sorts, perched atop the $14 million museum, which opened its doors to the public on Nov. 10.

The museum was funded through a combination of donations and the city’s Building on Basics tax, passed by voters in 2005. In March, the museum entered what co-executive director Annette Geiselman called “warp drive” fundraising.

The final push aimed to raise the final $2.8 million of the total $26.7 million goal, including money for the digital dome. The museum’s goal was to secure money for the dome by Dec. 31.

The OtterBox Digital Dome Theater will seat 85 and will project shows that range from astronomy and paleontology to music and art.

“Features like the OtterBox Digital Dome Theater help categorize Fort Collins as a progressive and innovative community,´ said Curt Richardson, founder and chairman of OtterBox.

“It’s important to educate youth and inspire them to constantly learn and grow. We are privileged to have part in facilitation that throughout Fort Collins,” Richardson said.

Films at the OtterBox Digital Dome Theater are shown Tuesday through Sunday and passes can be purchased at the ticket desk.
