Online petition for on-campus stadium supporters

FORT COLLINS – Build it and they will come.

That is one thought process behind the BeBoldCSU group backing the notion of an on-campus stadium at Colorado State University. Just as the opposing organization, Save Our Stadium Hughes, has created an online petition regarding the negative impact of a new stadium, the BeBoldCSU group has done the same to highlight the positive changes that it believes could come with the stadium initiative. The petition will be delivered to city and state officials for consideration.

The petition, found on MoveOn.org, has obtained 988 signatures as of midday Tuesday, and has a current goal of 1,000.

Outlined on the BeBoldCSU website, the organization has emphasized five main points to back the construction of a new stadium, including development of strong game-day traditions, attracting coaches and players, generating national exposure and recognition, a strong economic impact for the Fort Collins community and the idea that it will be a multiuse facility for university and city purposes.

“We would love CSU to go to the next level in athletics,” Matt Nesbitt of Fort Collins posted to the BeBoldCSU petition as he signed it on Feb. 15, “A new stadium would be a huge step in that direction.”

Hughes Stadium, opened in 1968, is located a little more than 4 miles to the west of the main CSU campus. Current capacity of the stadium is 32,500, with the proposed on-campus stadium able to seat 40,000 spectators.

The estimated cost of the new stadium is $226.5 million, half of which is being raised through private donors. The CSU Board of Governors will move forward with stadium construction if half the cost can be raised by October, two years after the process was initiated.

Denver’s Mortenson Construction was elected by CSU in October as the lead contractor if the project comes to fruition.
