John Matsushima, a retired CSU professor and a pioneer in beef-cattle nutrition, was honored Jan. 14 as 2013 Citizen of the West by the National Western Stock Show. During his 30-year career as a professor and researcher in the Department of Animal Sciences, Matsushima became a world-renowned expert whose innovations, beginning in the 1960s, helped modernize and expand U.S. beef production.

GOVERNMENT
The Greeley Chamber of Commerce elected new members and the executive committee in December for the coming year. Steve Baker of Greeley-based Sears Real Estate, Gary Cyr of Greeley-Weld County Airport and Horace Elliott of Greeley-based National Board of Chiropractic Examiners joined the board, and will each serve a one-year term.
City of Fort Collins councilmember Gerry Horak and Firestone Mayor Chad Auer have been appointed to the National League of Cities 2012 Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Steering Committee. The committee has the lead responsibility for developing NLC federal policy positions on issues involving air quality, water quality, energy policy, wetlands policy, noise control and solid and hazardous waste management.
HEALTH CARE
Dr. Thomas T. Peterson has joined Colorado Health Medical Group. Peterson is an ENT specialist, treating ear, nose and throat ailments. He joins Dr. Arthur Chen at CHMG’s ear, nose and throat clinic at Peakview Medical Center, 5881 W.16th St. in Greeley. Peterson has practiced in the Greeley community since 1994 and comes to CHMG from North Colorado Ear, Nose and Throat. After receiving undergraduate degrees in math and biology from MIT, Peterson earned his medical degree from the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and completed his residency in otolaryngology at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Dick Gast, a Fort Collins lawyer practicing with Myatt, Brandes & Gast, P.C., has been selected by his peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America 2013 in the field of real estate law. He also has been selected, based on peer evaluations, to the Colorado Super Lawyers list as one of the top lawyers in Colorado for 2013.
Otis, Coan & Peters LLC announced the addition of attorney R. Clay Bartlett. Prior to law school, Bartlett spent more than five years with M&T Bank in New York where he managed client relationships and a portfolio of commercial loans. Bartlett’s banking experience includes credit analysis of commercial and industrial loans. Bartlett will be based out of OCP’s Fort Collins office and will focus his practice on corporate transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, entity formation and capitalization; employment law and the legal needs of financial institutions, including loan structure and documentation.

Legacy Land Trust, a local land-conservation organization, celebrated its 20th anniversary in Larimer, Jackson and Weld counties, and added three new people to its board of directors: Robin Reid, senior research scientist and director of CSU’s Center for Collaborative Conservation; Steve VanDermeer, senior vice president of planning and marketing for the Fort Collins division of Hometown Connections utility services; and Lynn Fagerberg, owner of Fagerberg Produce Company and Fagerberg Farm in Eaton.

Matt Brunner of Fort Collins-based Alphagraphics has been recognized on Colorado’s 25 Most Powerful Salespeople List in the January issue of ColoradoBiz magazine. Brunner was selected from more than 100 nominations submitted online at cobizmag.com. The magazine’s editorial board took into account qualities such as tenacity, obstacles surmounted, empathy for the consumer and demonstrated passion for the product or service.
REAL ESTATE
Ben Ward has joined Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Fort Collins as a broker associate serving Fort Collins, Loveland, Windsor and surrounding communities in Northern Colorado. Ward’s background includes positions as a nonprofit entrepreneur, business management and as corporate quality manager for an IT support company. He started the Colorado Cultural Arts Society and NoCo Writers, which collectively have more than 500 members. Ward has also hosted more than 350 art and creative-writing workshops over the past four years.
The Group Inc. announced that Jon DeLeon has joined as a broker associate/partner. DeLeon earned a business degree from CSU. He has experience in customer relations, business development, real estate valuation and real estate investment analysis.
RE/MAX Advanced announced that Stephanie Steward has joined the company. Steward is a CSU alumnus with a degree in business administration, and has more than 15 years of experience in Northern Colorado real estate.
