Nonprofit Embrace Northern Colorado shuts down

FORT COLLINS — A nonprofit dedicated to helping shape the future vision for Northern Colorado announced Friday it has shut down operations.

Board chairwoman Kathy Gilliland said Fort Collins-based Embrace Northern Colorado has been dissolved due to a decline in funding and because more groups have become involved in pursuing the nonprofit’s mission.

For nearly the past seven years, the nonprofit has been uniting groups with varied interests in Weld and Larimer counties to address issues that accompany growth such as transportation and water.

WomenGive, a program of United Way of Larimer County, was started in Larimer County in 2006 as an opportunity for women in our community to come together to help other women.

The nonprofit was co-founded in April 2008 by John Daggett, who served as executive director for about four and one-half years. Gilliland said as funding began to dwindle, Daggett gave up his paid position and for a while continued leading the group as a volunteer.

Gilliland said with the advancement of other organizations taking the discussion of regional issues to the forefront, the fundamental goals of Embrace Northern Colorado have been reached.

“Rather than contend with other groups for valuable resources relating to regional visioning, ENC plans to step back and offer support to these other efforts and organizations,” she said.

The nonprofit’s accomplishments included:

Hosting a regional conference attended by nearly 400 people with nationally-recognized experts on growth and regional visioning;

Convening a Regional Leadership Alliance comprised of community leaders from Northern Colorado to explore community values and trends affecting the region;

Completing Northern Colorado’s first Community Values Survey in partnership with the Human Dimensions of Natural Resources Department at Colorado State University. More than 1,300 respondents participated in the survey identifying issues and shared values important to the region;

Compiling and sharing data and research related to trends in demographics, land use, growth, transportation, and economic impacts projected for the future of Northern Colorado.
