New entity filings portend Colorado job growth through first half of 2015

State employment growth is projected to continue through the first and second quarters of 2015, according to a report released Thursday by the University of Colorado Boulder and Colorado Secretary of State Wayne Williams.

The quarterly indicators report compiled by the CU business school’s Business Research Division is based on 2014 fourth-quarter new business filings, which continued to grow. Those include entity renewals, trademarks and trade name registrations filed with Williams’ office.

New business filings in the fourth quarter of 2014 numbered 23,320, down from 27,640 in the third quarter. But a “fee holiday” implemented last summer concluded in October, accounting for some of the drop.

The report findings are based on analysis that shows a strong correlation between new entity filings and total nonfarm employment.

The state registered 102,127 new entities in 2014, up 13.8 percent from 2013. Entity renewals for the fourth quarter, meanwhile, rose 5.5 percent versus the same period a year ago. Colorado finished the year with 570,093 entities in good standing, up 2.8 percent from the previous quarter and 8.5 percent from a year earlier.
