Museum of Boulder to receive first installment of $500,000 NEH grant

BOULDER — The Museum of Boulder on Tuesday will receive the first installment of a $500,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities that will be used to help pay for a new museum.

On Tuesday, Sept. 1, U.S. Representative Jared Polis will present the first $50,000 installment to museum officials. The NEH grant will be matched with other money raised by the museum and will be applied toward the purchase of the former Masonic Lodge building at 2205 Broadway that is being renovated to house the museum.

The NEH awarded six grants to Colorado organizations totaling $659,296.

The Museum of Boulder, formerly the Boulder History Museum, acquired the Masonic Lodge in 2013.  The new location at the corner of Broadway and Pine, near downtown Boulder, offers improved visibility and additional square footage to accommodate larger, interactive exhibits.

The Museum of Boulder will display Boulder’s history and showcase the community’s involvement in science, technology, sports and natural foods. It also will contain a gallery for world-class exhibits from the Smithsonian and other nationally recognized museums.

In addition, the lower level of the building will house a children’s museum.

The Museum of Boulder gained financial support for its vision with the passing of the 2A ballot measure in November 2014 for $4 million in matching funds from the city of Boulder. Construction and renovation of the building is expected to start in 2016.
