Moreland closes on property for new Jeep dealership in Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS — “Dealin’ Doug” Moreland, co-owner of Fort Collins Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, has closed on the $3.75 million purchase of property in Fort Collins, where he and partner Mike Downey plan to open a separate Jeep dealership.

Moreland’s entity Moreland Properties LLC bought the 4.5-acre site of the former United Building Centers lumber yard at 224 W. Harmony Road from LN Real Estate LLC, according to public records.

Downey, who is a partner in Fort Collins Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram but not the land purchase, said in a phone interview Wednesday that he and Moreland are in the process of completing a traffic study for the site so they can submit more formal plans for city approval. The car dealers submitted preliminary plans to the city earlier this summer to renovate the existing building on the property.

“About all of it that’s going to be left is the frame,” Downey said. “It will be completely new by the time we’re done.”

The pair had planned to move their Fort Collins dealership, which they acquired in 2009, to land Moreland bought last year at the southeast corner of Interstate 25 and Colorado Highway 392. But they bagged those plans as negotiations on an intergovernmental agreement between Fort Collins and Windsor regarding the future of the intersection dragged out.

The plan now, Downey said, is that once the new Jeep dealership opens, the existing Fort Collins Dodge Chrysler Ram location at 3835 S. College Ave. will be renovated.

Downey said he expects to be 18 to 24 months out from opening the new Jeep dealership, depending on construction timelines and the approval process with the city.

The current dealership has roughly 400 cars on the lot at any one time, Downey said. He said he expects that once the new Jeep dealership is built that each location will have between 200 and 250 vehicles. He said he foresees the combined dealership, which employs roughly 120 people now, to add 20 or 30 new jobs once the new site opens.

The concept of separating out the Jeep dealership is one that Chrysler is looking to roll out in several spots across the country, Downey said.

“We think that this is a good time and great market to do that in,” he said.
