McWhinney, Sage plan hotel in downtown Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS — Real estate developer McWhinney and Sage Hospitality announced Wednesday they will build an 85,000 square-foot hotel at the former Armadillo restaurant site on Walnut Street in downtown Fort Collins.

McWhinney, with offices in Loveland and Denver, and Denver-based Sage Hospitality are receiving financial support from local investors, including Fort Collins-based Bohemian Cos.

“This hotel will fill a longstanding need for a downtown lodging and meeting facility,” said Matt Robenalt, executive director of Fort Collins’ Downtown Development Authority, in a prepared statement. “This is a community vision that is coming to fruition and which will add to the vibrancy and economic vitality of our city.”

Solar Operations and Maintenance for Commercial Properties

One key qualification to consider when selecting a solar partner to install your system is whether they have an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) or service department. Since solar is a long-term asset with an expected lifecycle of 30 plus years, ongoing O&M should be considered up front. A trusted O&M partner will maximize your system’s energy output and therefor the return on your investment.

The 165-room hotel will have meeting space and a ballroom. Sage Hospitality will take an active role in the hotel design and will manage day-to-day operations of the hotel.

“We’re looking forward to providing a great space for visitors and locals alike,” said Chad McWhinney, chief executive and co-founder of McWhinney. “Fort Collins’ vibrant culture will be apparent in everything from architecture to food offerings.”

Denver-based Sage Restaurant Group, which has several restaurants in the area, plans to implement one of its newest brands in part of the available restaurant space.

The group of developers and investors is currently pursuing cost estimates and plans to begin construction next year, with estimated completion of the project slated for 2017.

McWhinney and Sage Hospitality recently served on the Union Station Alliance to redevelop Denver’s historic Union Station, a luxury hotel, restaurants and high-end retail. In addition, McWhinney and Sage Hospitality are redeveloping Denver’s historic Windsor Dairy Block buildings, for a mixed-use concept, including a Sage Hospitality independent hotel.

McWhinney and Sage will lease the future hotel site from Fort Collins-based Bohemian Cos., which owns the two-acre land parcel.

“This hotel will continue to increase the vitality of downtown Fort Collins, and we’re pleased to be working with other investors to move the project forward,” said Joe Zimlich, CEO at Bohemian Cos.
