Lumos, Lighthouse merge, cut 25 jobs

BOULDER – Sister companies Lumos Solar LLC and Lighthouse Solar Inc. have merged into one company under the Lumos brand, with the combined employee count dropping from 40 to 15, a company official confirmed Tuesday.

Lumos marketing manager Stephanie Chen said the merger of the two Boulder companies means a focus more on the product side of the solar business and less on services.

Chen said some of the employees laid off were able to get onboard with local companies that partner with Lumos.

Lighthouse Solar’s franchising division will remain, with franchises in Austin, Texas, and New Paltz, New York, continuing operations as they have in the past under the Lighthouse name.

Clean Energy Solutions Inc., owned by Scott Franklin, is the parent company of both Lumos and Lighthouse. Franklin has served as president and chief executive of both companies and remains in that capacity.

The two companies have operated out of different parts of the same building since their founding in 2006 (Lighthouse) and 2007 (Lumos).

Lumos was focused on the design and engineering of solar panels. Lighthouse’s focus was on solar system design, engineering and installation of residential and commercial projects, and its services were not exclusive to Lumos panels.

The privately held companies do not disclose revenue.

The combined company, Chen said, will have two main divisions: the product side and an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) side that supports the product side. Chen said the EPC side’s main focus will be on construction management of larger commercial solar installations, and the company will work with local installers rather than using its own installer crews.

“We have that capability on our EPC side so we can offer (customers) a turnkey solution for their solar-system desires,” Chen said.

The merger, she said, provides for more collaboration between the product-design people and the project-management side. The company will remain at 3550 Frontier Ave.

“There is already a lot more collaboration between both teams,” Chen said. “Now the mentality is more of one single company.”

Chen said more details regarding the merger are expected to be announced Thursday.
