Lafayette’s ConfluenceSBC co-working space quadruples size

LAFAYETTE – ConfluenceSBC, a year-old co-working space in downtown Lafayette, is holding a ribbon-cutting ceremony and open house from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday to celebrate a recent expansion that quadrupled the company’s space.

ConfluenceSBC, whose owners dub it a “small-business collective,” offers small-business and professional education programming in addition to the co-working offerings.

Founded by Tom Hardie and his wife Kristin, ConfluenceSBC is at 102 E. Cleveland St., and originally had about 700 square feet of space when it opened last year. But the recent expansion gives the business nearly 3,000 square feet.

The space features a variety of open desks, semiprivate and private offices, and conference rooms and space for making private calls. Prices range from $15 for a daily drop-in by a non-member to $250 for a monthly membership with a dedicated desk and 24-hour access.

Tom Hardie said there’s capacity now for between 20 and 25 people at any one time depending on configuration. But perhaps more important is the added room for private meetings, which the original space didn’t accommodate as well early on.

“Nine out of 10 people who walked in and inquired were looking for a space where they could get away for a call or some quiet,” Hardie said.

Hardie said ConfluenceSBC, which has about 15 full-time members, had steadily outgrown its original space.

While the co-working model is one that’s thrived in many larger cities and tech hubs like Boulder, Confluence SBC is one of the few places in the east Boulder County communities of Superior, Louisville and Lafayette that offers such services.  Longmont saw its first co-working space, Launch Longmont, open late last year.

“It’s an experiment for us to take this model that’s been very successful in cities like Boulder and Denver and bring it to a community like this,” Hardie said. “It’s a different market but still we’re finding there’s a real interest.”
