Kerr: Master of the press, rod and reel

Bennett’s Tackle Shop in Berthoud probably had never been the site of a memorial service. That changed on Thursday, May 1, when Don Kerr had his sendoff there.

Kerr’s memorial observation began at 2 p.m. at the 50-year-old bait and tackle shop at 121 Bunyan Ave. in Berthoud, continued at Welch Reservoir and concluded at the American Legion hall in Longmont.

Kerr’s passing caught The Eye because of his role with the origins of this newspaper. Kerr spent much of his early life running a press, including the one that printed this publication. Kerr was pressroom foreman at the Longmont Times-Call for many years. He knew ink and paper, press speeds and blanket rollers very well. He disliked editors who missed their deadlines.

Solar Operations and Maintenance for Commercial Properties

One key qualification to consider when selecting a solar partner to install your system is whether they have an Operations and Maintenance (O&M) or service department. Since solar is a long-term asset with an expected lifecycle of 30 plus years, ongoing O&M should be considered up front. A trusted O&M partner will maximize your system’s energy output and therefor the return on your investment.

His avocation became his vocation after leaving the pressroom. He found a home at Bennett’s, selling bait and tackle, and The Eye is sure he also provided advice on the second best fishing spots in the region – we suspect he reserved the best fishing holes for himself and his friends.

Before the memorial service, the bait shop was to conduct its annual fishing day for handicapped children from the Loveland area – an activity in which Kerr always participated.

“I’ve been at this store 38 years and have met just about all the fishermen around here – but Don Kerr is one of the few people I ever learned from,” Todd said. “As good a pressman as he was, he was an even better fisherman.”
