Green-driven B Lab opens office in Boulder

BOULDER – B Lab, a nonprofit that promotes green-thinking for businesses, has opened B Lab Colorado and hired Boulderite Kim Coupounas to head the office and lead an effort to make Colorado the national leader in better business practices.

B Lab Colorado will be housed at Impact HUB Boulder, a business accelerator and incubator at 1877 Broadway, No. 100, in Boulder.

Colorado is home to more than 30 certified B corporations, about 20 of which are in Boulder. The local B corp community led an effort to pass Colorado benefit corporation legislation in 2013, which will become effective April 1.

Being B Corp.-certified is similar to the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for green-conscious companies. The designation comes from B Lab in Wayne, Pennsylvania. Companies looking for the designation go through an independent verification process in which they answer questions that show they are socially and environmentally conscious.

Coupounas, co-founder of Boulder-based outdoor manufacturer and retailer GoLite LLC, is a frequent public speaker on entrepreneurship, leadership and sustainability, and is a vocal champion of responsible business practices.

“Kim is a highly credible entrepreneur and leader who brings broad and deep business experience with special expertise in empowering diverse communities to achieve common objectives,´ said Andrew Kassoy, B Lab co-founder and Boulder native.

B Lab Colorado plans to open more offices in other Colorado cities.

B Lab will be hosting two free workshops on B corporations that are open to all businesses. The workshops will review the nature of this new corporate form, which businesses it is ideally suited for, how it differs from conventional structures and how to make the switch to a benefit corporation structure.

The workshops will be from 6 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 21, at Impact HUB Boulder, and from 4 to 7 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Davis Graham & Stubbs, 1550 17th St., No 500, in downtown Denver.

Presenters will include attorneys Seth Henry of Blue Dot Advocates and Peter Schwartz of Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP, as well as Jay Coen-Gilbert, co-founder of B Lab.
