Greeley funeral home owner arrested for alleged theft

A Greeley-based funeral home owner accused of stealing money from elderly and low-income clients has been arrested at a Motel 6 in Larimer County.
Paul Acuna, the owner Paul’s Funeral Service and Cremation, is accused of two counts of theft from an at-risk adult, two counts of theft, 10 counts of forgery and one count of theft regarding his dealings with the state. His funeral service has been closed since April.
According to police, Acuna was discovered to be bilking both the state and his clients, overcharging destitute families and then filing for financial assistance on funeral costs with the county’s Department of Health Services.

A program within the department requires funeral homes to charge low-income families no more than $2,500. By demanding the full rate from his customers while filing for assistance from the county, Acuna was able to pocket fraudulent payments of more than $12,000, according to the Greeley Tribune.
Acuna, arrested just after midnight Monday morning, told CBS 4 that the charges are the result of an accounting oversight, not intentional theft.
He was being held in Larimer County Jail on a bond of $75,000.
