GoLite founders aiming to start new outdoor gear company?

BOULDER – Outdoor gear manufacturer GoLite might be no more, but its founders say they’ll start a new, similar company.

The announcement was made on GoLite’s Facebook page on Tuesday, though few specific details were divulged.

“Founders of GoLite will start a new company, looking to become a global manufacturer of innovative and responsibly-made apparel and equipment designed for the outdoors,” the post read. “They strive to be a leader in terms of channel distribution, technical performance, and sustainable business practice. Maintaining their status as a Colorado based company, looking forward to seeing you on the trail.”

A Denver judge dismissed the bankruptcy case of Coupounas LLC, which did business as GoLite, earlier this month following the completion of the company’s liquidation sale in December that yielded enough cash to pay off its secured creditor but not enough to pay off the nearly $6 million owed to unsecured creditors.

Any new company would likely come under a different brand.

GoLite co-founder Demetri “Coup” Coupounas told BizWest last fall as bankruptcy proceedings progressed that he was seeking investors to keep the company going. But the GoLite brand was sold by Coupounas to apparel retailer Timberland in 2006 and then licensed back. After Coupounas filed for bankruptcy last year, Timberland terminated the licensing deal.
