Global-trade uncertainties threaten Boulder, Greeley

Boulder, Denver and Greeley are heavily dependent on global trade and are particularly vulnerable to a potential global trade war.

That’s according to an analysis from the Metropolitan Policy Program at Brookings, as reported in The Denver Post. The report cites the Boulder metropolitan statistical area — encompassing Boulder County — as relying on trade more than any other MSA in Colorado, with 12 percent of is 2015 economic output depending on trade.

Exports accounted for $2.7 billion in Boulder economic activity during 2015, supporting 14,570 jobs.

The Greeley MSA — encompassing Weld County — also relies heavily on international trade, due largely to the agribusiness sector, including meat-packing facilities and food processing.

Exports contributed $1.5 billion to Weld’s economic activity during 2015, or 11.2 percent, accounting for 8,781 jobs.

Metropolitan Denver exports totalled $14 billion in 2015, or 7.8 percent of economic output, supporting 94,563 jobs.
