Four regional airports approved to receive state funding

Four municipal airports in the Boulder Valley and Northern Colorado have been approved by the Colorado Department of Transportation’s Division of Aeronautics to receive funding that will be used to improve safety and infrastructure.

Vance Brand Airport in Longmont, Erie Municipal Airport, Greeley-Weld County Airport and Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport in Broomfield are awaiting final approval from Gov. John Hickenlooper to receive the state funding.

Airport projects must include local and/or federal fund participation in order to receive the Colorado discretionary aviation grants.

Greeley-Weld County Airport was approved for $250,000 in state funding that will be used along with $350,000 in local funding and $5.4 million in federal funding distributed by the Federal Aviation Administration on a $6 million project to repair and improve the airport’s runway.

Rocky Mountain Metropolitan Airport was approved for $250,000 that will be used along with $380,000 in local funding and $5.67 million in federal funding on a $6.3 million project to repair its runway.

Vance Brand Airport was approved for $14,079 in state funding that will be added with $14,080 in local funds and $253,429 in federal funding distributed to make $281,588 worth of improvements for pavement rehabilitation and maintenance.

The Erie Municipal Airport was approved for $23,330 that will be used with $23,330 of local funding and $420,000 of federal funding for a $466,666 project to construct a building to house snow-removal equipment.

The division’s board of directors approved $2.7 million in funding for 27 of the state’s 74 airports. The funding comes from money collected through state fuel taxes.

A 2013 economic-impact study of Colorado airports showed that they support 265,700 jobs, provide $12.6 billion in annual payroll and $36.7 billion in total annual economic output.
