Former Bacardi CEO leads acquisition of Blue Moose of Boulder

LAFAYETTE — A group of investors led by the former chief executive of Bacardi has acquired the controlling interest in Blue Moose of Boulder, a maker of natural hummus and refrigerated spreads that is based in Lafayette.

Investor Group, led by Ed Shirley, announced Tuesday that it acquired the majority of Blue Moose’s assets earlier this month. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Investor Group intends to grow the company’s sales by broadening awareness of its Blue Moose and Ciolo brands, and extending its distribution, according to a prepared statement.

Shirley, the former CEO of Bacardi and former vice chairman of Procter and Gamble, will serve as chairman of the new Blue Moose of Boulder LLC.

Dan Fink and Fred Howard join Shirley as lead investors.

Fink worked with Shirley at Bacardi. He is the managing member of DWF Blue Moose Holdings LLC, the acquiring entity used by Investor Group. He has private-equity experience, including time at J.W. Childs Associates and Centerview Capital.

Howard, a consumer packaged goods executive, will serve as chief executive. He has held leadership roles at Gillette, and Procter and Gamble. He most recently was CEO of Metagenics Inc., a nutraceuticals company.

Bert Satori, current general manager of Blue Moose said, “We are proud of what we have achieved at Blue Moose with our team and our customer partners. We look forward to supporting this experienced consumer-focused Investor Group and accelerating our plans.”

Since 1997, Blue Moose has been manufacturing natural hummus, salsas, pestos, tapenades and spreads for consumers in the Midwest.
