Food Share needs donations to meet goal

LOUISVILLE – The nonprofit food bank Community Food Share wants your help.

Longmont-based Community Food Share has just $148,000 left to raise in a $1 million fund-raising challenge that ends Dec. 31. The money will go to support the purchase and remodel of the nonprofit’s new 68,000-square-foot building in the Colorado Technology Center business park in Louisville. The food bank has outgrown its current 22,400-square-foot location in Niwot, Community Food Share said in a press statement.

An anonymous donor pledged to give $2.5 million in cash to Community Food Share to buy the new Louisville location, if the group could raise the additional $1 million, according to the press statement. The donor’s vision is for the nonprofit group to be able to pay off a $3.5 million bridge loan, which will allow it to operate debt-free, according to the press statement.

Community Food Share bought the building at 650 Taylor Ave. in Louisville in August, the group said.

Community Food Share expects to distribute 7.65 million meals worth $12.7 million in 2012, according to tracking information done by the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Plate program. The group serves about 33,000 low-income people annually in Boulder and Broomfield counties through various programs, including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, residential treatment homes and emergency food box programs. It was founded in 1981.

Remodeling on the Louisville building is expected to wrap up in March. Community Food Share plans to move its operation from the current Monarch Business Park location in Niwot to the new Louisville location in the second quarter of 2013.
