Flooding thwarts travel south of Wyoming

Motorists headed into northeast Colorado from southeast Wyoming will probably need to rethink their travel plans.

Flooding has forced closures on Interstate 25 south of Cheyenne. U.S. Highway 85 south of Cheyenne also is closed. U.S. 287 south of Laramie also was closed due to flooding and rock slides south of the Wyoming border.

The closures were made at the request of Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Department of Transportation.

“Interstate 25 will remain closed to all traffic, however on U.S. 85 and U.S. 287 emergency traffic and local Colorado residents only will be allowed southbound out of Wyoming,” Sergeant Stephen Townsend of the Wyoming Highway Patrol said in a release. “No commercial vehicle traffic will be allowed at this time.

“Troopers or WYDOT personnel will be manning the road closure gates,” he continued.  “At this time it is unknown how long these road closures will remain.  It is possible that this will be a long-term event.”
