Federal judge taps brakes on Obama’s new overtime rules
Employers across the country might not have to address the Obama administration’s new federal overtime rules next week after all.
The New York Times reports that a federal judge in Texas on Tuesday issued an injunction against the new rules, halting their enforcement until the court has more time to rule on their merits. Judge Amos L. Mazzant III, according to the Times, “ruled that the Obama administration had exceeded its authority by raising the overtime salary limit so significantly.”
The new overtime rules would require employers to pay employees who make less than $47,476 per year overtime for any hours worked beyond 40 in a week. That salary limit currently is set at $23,660.
