Event at CU to offer crowdfunding primer

BOULDER – Simply Crowdfunding, a two-day event to show entrepreneurs a way to raise money, is slated for Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 8-9, on the University of Colorado-Boulder campus on Wednesday, Aug. 8, and Thursday, Aug. 9.

Vim Events Inc. in Boulder is hosting the event at the Wolf Law Building, 2450 Kittredge Loop Road. Organizers are touting the event as the first of its kind in the state.

Crowdfunding investment ideas are drawing “buzz” in Colorado and around the nation in recent months after Congress passed the Jumpstart Our Business Startups (JOBS) Act. The bill was signed into law by President Obama in April.

Exploring & expressing grief

Support groups and events, as well as creative therapies and professional counseling, are all ways in which Pathways supports individuals dealing with grief and loss.

The new legislation to help entrepreneurs and small businesses raise capital directly from individuals online is to go into effect in 2013. Before that, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission – the government body that regulates equity and capital – has 270 days to make rules about how the legislation can work.

Steve Reaser, chief executive of Vim Funding Inc., in Boulder, and Brian Meece, chief executive of RocketHub, are scheduled speakers at the event. RocketHub is an online funding website company. Sherwood Neiss, co-author of the framework for the JOBS Act, also is scheduled to speak.

Crowdfunding companies such as RocketHub, Kickstarter and Indiegogo – all based in New York City – have drawn media attention to the idea of donation/reward-style fundraising campaigns in recent months. For an additional fee, Simply Crowdfunding will hold a four-hour course on Friday, Aug. 10, to discuss how attendees can create and manage their own fundraising campaigns.

For additional information about the event, and to register, go online at SimplyCrowdfunding.com. For those who register before Tuesday, July, 31, the cost is $159, or $99 for either Wednesday or Thursday attendance. After July 31, the registration cost is $179 or $109 respectively, and at the door it’s $199 or $119 respectively. Student discounts are available.

Sponsors of the event include the national Crowdfunding Professional Association, the national group CrowdFund Intermediary Regulatory Advocates, the local Story Stock Exchange, the regional Rockies Venture Club and others.
