EPA, White House officials to tour Poudre River

FORT COLLINS – The Environmental Protection Agency administrator and co-chairs of President Barack Obama’s climate change task force will join Fort Collins’ Mayor Karen Weitkunat for a tour and press conference Tuesday.

EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, White House Intergovernmental Affairs Director David Agnew and White House Council on Environmental Quality Chair Nancy Sutley will join Mayor Karen Weitkunat and City Manager Darin Atteberry on a walking tour of the Cache la Poudre River to learn about the local watershed and recent fires and floods.

The mayor, EPA administrator and White House officials will talk about actions at the local level that are leading toward greater preparedness and resilience to the impacts and effects of recent wildfire and flooding, natural disasters and climate change.

Weitkunat is part of a 26-member task force that will advise the president on how to prepare communities and help federal programs support efforts at the local level. The Natural Resources Research Center in Fort Collins is one of seven “climate hubs” selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture aimed at helping farmers, ranchers and forest landowners with information on how to continue production in a changing climate.
