Denver patent and trademark office to open June 30

DENVER – The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office said Friday that its permanent satellite office in Denver will open June 30.

Located in the Byron G. Rogers Federal Building in Denver’s central business district, the new office will help the region’s entrepreneurs advance new ideas to the marketplace and more efficiently navigate intellectual property matters, the federal agency said. The Denver satellite office also will begin hiring patent trial judges and patent examiners.

“In addition to creating jobs for intellectual property professionals throughout the region, the permanent Denver satellite office will be an indispensable resource for regional inventors, entrepreneurs and businesses,” Patent and Trademark Office deputy director Michelle K. Lee said in a statement.

The office will house patent examiners, Patent Trial and Appeal Board judges and outreach officials in a 45,000-square-foot space. Nine Patent Trial and Appeal Board judges are working in the temporary location opened in Lakewood. In addition to those judges, all of whom will relocate to the new office in Denver, the agency is seeking to hire additional judges and patent examiners, as well as a deputy regional director for outreach. All vacancy announcements are posted on www.usajobs.gov.

The opening date announcement follows efforts in 2011 by U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet, D-Colo., and Mark Udall, D-Colo., to secure an amendment in patent reform law to create three patent and trademark satellite offices.

“The opening of the satellite patent office is the beginning of a great partnership between Colorado and the USPTO,” Bennet said in a separate statement. “It’s a milestone moment that will boost Colorado’s innovation economy and benefit the entire Rocky Mountain region.”
