CU forum to focus on future of energy

BOULDER – An expert on climate change and the president of a Colorado-based think tank will be keynote speakers at a forum on the future of energy Thursday, April 4, on the University of Colorado-Boulder campus.

CU Energy Frontiers’ “The Next Decade” will feature presentations by strategists, utility companies and student researchers about the future of energy storage, the electric grid and energy policy.

Keynote speeches will be given by David Gardiner, who directed a White House task force on climate change during the Clinton administration, and Michael Potts, chief executive and president of the Rocky Mountain Institute, “think and do tank” made up of architects, scientists, engineers, communicators and administrators.

A panel discussion on competition and cooperation between the United States and China on energy policy will include: Mark Safty, a partner in the law firm of Holland & Hart LLP; Clay Stranger, manager of the Rocky Mountain Institute; Andy Paliszewski, director of wind research and development for Siemens Corp.; Ted James, a strategic energy analyst for the National Renewable Energy Laboratory; and Adam Reed, a researcher for the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Institute.

A pan discussion on the future of energy storage and implications for the electric grid will include: Paul Komor, a CU professor; Rebecca Johnson, a researcher for the Colorado Public Utilities Commission; Paul Denholm, a strategic energy analyst at NREL; Peter Lilienthal, CEO of Homer Energy; Cody Hill, a power systems and control engineer at Xtreme Power; and Sam Jaffe, an energy analyst at Navigant Research.

The event, which also will include a poster competition showcasing student projects, a career fair and a free lunch, is scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Glenn Miller Ballroom in the University Memorial Center on the CU campus. Free registration is at
