CSU’s Frank will decide on stadium in August

FORT COLLINS – Colorado State University President Tony Frank will wait until August to make a decision about whether to pursue an on-campus stadium.

The Stadium Advisory Committee assigned to determine the feasibility of a new stadium is supposed to make a recommendation to Frank at the end of spring semester in mid-May. Frank will take the summer to consider its findings.

If Frank approves the stadium, plans must then be approved by the CSU Board of Governors before they can move forward. The stadium could cost as much as $200 million and seat approximately 40,000.

The announcement was made a a public forum Monday night, which was attended by both supporters and dissenters. Another forum with the same content will be held tonight, at McGraw Athletic Center at 5:30 p.m.

Populous, a firm hired by CSU to serve as the design consultant for the project, also gave a presentation discussing its methods for determining stadium feasibility. The presentation described the firm’s process for evaluating a project from market study to specific plans, complete with designs and cost estimates.

Populous is among the nation’s top stadium designers, and is currently working on an on-campus stadium for Baylor University in Waco, Texas.

Monday night’s discussion followed a meeting last week of the stadium opposition group, Save Our Stadium, Hughes, which featured Ohio University professor and CSU graduate David Ridpath, who called the proposed stadium a “boondoggle.”

Ridpath is a nationally recognized intercollegiate athletics expert who published a book titled “Tainted Glory,” about his experiences with collegiate athletics.
At tonight’s forum, a pro-stadium group called “Be Bold” will officially announce itself.
