Colorado Premium Foods planning expansion of Greeley packing plant

GREELEY — Colorado Premium Foods is planning to add 18,000 square feet of office and refrigerated storage space at its meat-processing and packing plant in Greeley.

The Greeley-based company has submitted preliminary designs to the city’s planning department for additions to its headquarters at 2035 2nd Ave. in the Greeley Industrial Park.

Colorado Premium Foods plans to add additional refrigerated storage space, six shipping and receiving docks, about 2,300 square feet of office space and a new upgraded 3,400-square-foot employee cafeteria.

Rocky Mountain Health Plans (RMHP), part of the UnitedHealthcare family, has pledged its commitment to uplift these communities through substantial investments in organizations addressing the distinct needs of our communities.

CPF’s facility in Greeley, where it employs about 250 people, currently has a refrigerated cooler that can store approximately 600,000 pounds of product. During its peak season that runs from July through March, the company is forced to load products into external refrigerated trailers due to exceeding the current product-storage capacity. On average, CPF told city planners that it has to store approximately 300,000 pounds of products on these external trailers. The company said in its proposal for the addition, “This process is a costly and inefficient way to handle products due to double handling, trailer rental, fuel usage and space requirements.”

The new addition was designed by Schneider Structural Engineering Inc. of Omaha, Neb.

Colorado Premium in early 2013 completed a $2 million expansion of its facility in the Stockyard area of Denver. The project added and reconfigured 25,000 square feet of space to create processing areas for fresh ground beef, hand-cut steaks and marinated meats. Another 75,000 square feet of cold storage was also incorporated into the site.

Colorado Premium was founded in 1998 by former Con-Agra/Monfort executives Don Babcock and Kevin LaFleur. It serves retailers, restaurant chains and private labels.
