Colorado health insurance marketplace sign-ups top 171,000

More than 171,000 Coloradans have enrolled in health-care coverage through the first two months of the open-enrollment period on Colorado’s health insurance marketplace, according to new figures released Monday.

The numbers come from Connect for Health Colorado and the Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing.

The total figure includes 121,650 people who have enrolled in private insurance coverage, 47,724 in Medicaid and 2,272 in Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+). Consumers had until Jan. 15 to register for coverage for their plans to go into effect Feb. 1. Policies bought between now and the final Feb. 15 deadline will go into effect March 1.

WomenGive, a program of United Way of Larimer County, was started in Larimer County in 2006 as an opportunity for women in our community to come together to help other women.

Locally, Boulder County has seen 11,404 people sign up so far for private health insurance through the exchange. Larimer County has had 9,213 such signups, Weld County 5,027 and Broomfield County 1,606.

Connect for Health Colorado doesn’t have comparable figures for counties year-to-date versus last year, the first year of the exchange, because last year’s open-enrollment period lasted six months while this year’s has been condensed to three.

But statewide last year, the marketplace enrolled more than 148,000 people in private insurance. That figure includes about 127,000 who signed up during open enrollment as well as people who added coverage through the exchange after open enrollment due to life-changing events like losing a job, moving to Colorado or having a child.

Coloradans without health insurance provided through their employers must apply by Feb. 15 to sign up for private coverage through the exchange. Enrollment is allowed after that date only for those who have significant life-changing events. However, those eligible for coverage through Medicaid and CHP+ have no deadlines and may apply at any time during the year.

For those still needing to enroll for 2015, Connect for Health Colorado has several in-person enrollment centers around the state, including Fort Collins, Greeley and Lafayette, where people can get assistance with signing up. Complete information on all of the in-person sites can be found on Connect for Health Colorado’s website.
