Cloud-computing firm selects Boulder

BOULDER – Another fast-growing cloud computing company has landed in Boulder.

SolidFire Inc. has leased a 10,000 square foot office space at 1620 Pearl St. Suite 200.

SolidFire is ramping up its presence in Boulder and hiring new employees as it prepares to launch its main product later this year, vice president of sales and marketing Jay Prassl said.

In preparation for Republic Services becoming the primary provider of residential recycling, yard trimmings, and trash, residents should now select the best cart size and service schedule for their household needs.

SolidFire was incorporated in 2010 and originally based in Atlanta. Boulder is the company’s new home, Prassl said.

SolidFire will offer “high performance storage for cloud computing,” Prassl said. Press releases and information on SolidFire’s website say the company is developing a storage platform for cloud computing providers and enterprises that relies on solid state storage technology.

SolidFire has raised $12 million in venture capital. It had a $1 million seed round, and earlier this year closed an $11 million Series A round. New Enterprise Associates, Valhalla Partners and Novak Biddle Venture Partners are investors.

Prassl declined to say how many employees SolidFire has hired or is about to hire, but he said the company is growing quickly. It is advertising for software engineers on its website.

SolidFire is the third VC-backed cloud-computing company to call that stretch of Pearl Street home.

Symplified Inc., which focuses on securing cloud networks through access and identity management, is located in the same building at 1600 Pearl St. Symplified has raised $18.8 million, including a $9.2 million Series B round that closed in January.

Standing Cloud Inc. is located at 1412 Pearl St. Suite 200.  Standing Cloud hosts and manages applications over cloud networks. It has raised $5 million, including a $3 million Series B round that closed in November.

The proximity of cloud computing startups is not a coincidence, Prassl said.

“Boulder is very much a hot spot for data-storage talent,” he said.

Bill Chambers, founder, CEO and president of LeftHand Networks, is a member of SolidFire’s board of directors. LeftHand Networks was acquired by Hewlett-Packard Co. in 2008.

SolidFire’s building is owned by Pearl Street Mall Properties Inc. J Nold Midyette represented the landlord. Wade Wimmer and Tom Lepry of Jones Lang LaSalle Americas Inc. represented SolidFire.
