Clean Energy Collective awarded solar project in southern Colorado

LOUISVILLE — Clean Energy Collective in Louisville has been selected by Black Hills Energy/Colorado Electric to build a 500-kilowatt community solar array in southern Colorado, adding to the 120-kilowatt array Clean Energy built last fall for Black Hills.

CEC’s program, known as RooflessSolar, features local, offsite, commercial-grade solar installations accessible to all electricity customers in a utility territory. CEC is making a portion of the new array available to low-income residents served by Black Hills Energy. A limited amount of capacity is available in the first project.

The site selection process is underway, said Tim Braun, CEC’s director of public affairs.

“Essentially, we look for an accessible location that is optimal for production and grid connection. The cost to build is then determined based on array design and materials. It is often a seven figure investment,” he said via email.

Rapid City, S.D.-based Black Hills Energy, part of Black Hills Corp. (NYSE: BKH), serves 1.2 million customers in eight states, including southern Colorado and territories in Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wyoming.

Kevin Pratt, renewable energy manager at Black Hills Energy, said this new project complements the existing community solar garden in Black Hills’ service territory. “This supports Black Hills’ much broader efforts to introduce more choices in renewable energy for its 95,000 Colorado electric customers.”
