City of Fort Collins: CSU on-campus stadium will cost city millions

FORT COLLINS – The city of Fort Collins estimates the proposed on-campus stadium at Colorado State University would cost the city between $13 million and $22 million for transportation infrastructure alone, according to a report released Wednesday.

CSU staff members and consultants worked with city employees to examine costs and impacts related to transportation as well as police and parking enforcement, utilities, noise and lighting and environment. The report will aid the city in its development of an agreement between the city and the university if the on-campus stadium goes forward.

City officials have stressed that a proposed agreement between the city and the university would help the organizations decide which stadium-related costs they should share. CSU estimates the cost of a new stadium at $226.5 million.

The city outlined multiple improvements to transportation infrastructure, including upgrades to several intersections as well as pedestrian and bike crossings. Additional costs related to the new stadium to replace aging Hughes Stadium in west Fort Collins are as follows:

$1.75 million to $2.4 million in stormwater utility costs, including a sewer and storm sewers;
$3,710 to pay six police officers and a supervisor, including overtime, for each game;
$24,000 for 400 signs at $60 apiece;
$38,000 for additional MAX buses at six games;
$15,360 for additional buses from Interstate 25 and Prospect Avenue to Whitcomb;
$26,880 for more buses at West Elizabeth Street and West Prospect Avenue;
$7,680 for more buses on campus.

The Fort Collins City Council is scheduled to discuss the report at a meeting Tuesday. CSU President Tony Frank will present his recommendations for the stadium at a Board of Governors meeting next Friday in Denver.
