California firm Exadel acquires Boulder-based Amadeus Consulting

BOULDER – Amadeus Consulting, a Boulder provider of custom software development services founded by Lisa Calkins and John Basso in 1994, has been acquired by Walnut Creek, Calif.-based software-engineering firm Exadel.

The two companies announced the merger Wednesday morning, though terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Calkins, the CEO at Amadeus, said her company was seeking to grow at a faster pace and had been searching for a partner for over a year that could help make that happen.

While Exadel has its headquarters in California, most of its developers are based in eastern European countries like Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. Calkins said Exadel had been looking to acquire an office in the United States where it could offer boutique-like services similar to the Amadeus offerings.

“It’s a really great opportunity for growth for us,” Calkins said in an interview. “For us to have the backing of a larger tech company that’s very much aligned with us is incredibly valuable.”

Amadeus employs about 75 people, all in Boulder, the addition of which will give Exadel roughly 1,000 worldwide.

Amadeus will become part of Exadel, and Calkins said her company will switch over to the Exadel branding over the next six months. The Amadeus office in east Boulder, as well as the local staff and leadership, will remain, though some finance functions will be shifted to California. Calkins is staying onboard as chief strategy officer of Exadel, and will continue to run the Boulder office.

Calkins said she expects to hire at least 10 more employees for the Boulder office over the next 12 months.

“We are continuing to grow and hire our staff here in Boulder, and Exadel is continuing to grow as well,” Calkins said.

Amadeus does north of $10 million in annual sales. Calkins declined to disclose the figure for Exadel, which is also privately held. While the two companies provide many of the same services, they also service some different markets. Exadel’s clientele includes multiple Fortune 100 companies and large corporate enterprises, while the Amadeus clientele generally is smaller, private companies.

“Amadeus shares our philosophy of ‘brains over bodies’ in its ability to design and build applications that lead companies to new opportunities, and to empower them to thrive and prosper within their industry,” Exadel CEO Fima Katz said in a news release. “We both share a long history of technical innovation for organizations looking to adopt leading-edge software development to succeed and win. Our individual strengths complement each other greatly, and together we will create a global company that organizations can turn to when they need that spark of innovation that will transform their business.”
