Broomfield-based Colibri to receive patent for innovative heart valve

BROOMFIELD — Colibri Heart Valve LLC, a privately held medical-device company based in Broomfield, has received notice that it will receive a U.S. patent for a heart valve that is implanted via a needle-puncture rather than an opening created by a scalpel.

Colibri expects to receive the patent Sept. 8 that covers the assembly of a transcatheter heart valve with a tubular structure that flares at both ends. The assembly also includes a pusher member and a delivery sheath.

The patent is expected to provide Colibri with broad protection for the assembly through Jan. 4, 2022. This patent is the fifth issued in 2015 associated with Colibri’s transcatheter heart valve.

“Colibri has invested heavily in maximizing its intellectual property footprint, which has been significantly bolstered with the addition of this patent,” Joseph B. Horn, Colibri’s president and chief executive officer, said in a prepared statement. “This soon-to-issue patent covers a percutaneous replacement heart valve and a delivery and implantation system with a priority date of 2002 that is both early and meaningful in the transcatheter heart valve market.” In surgery, percutaneous pertains to a medical procedure where access to inner organs or other tissue is done via needle-puncture of the skin, rather than by using an “open” approach where inner organs or tissue are exposed, typically with the use of a scalpel.

With the patent, Colibri plans to accelerate development of a self-expanding heart-valve program to complement its clinical-stage balloon expandable heart valve technology. Colibri said it will be the only company with both intellectual property and technology to develop pre-packaged, ready-for-use, balloon and self-expanding transcatheter heart-valve technology for aortic, mitral and pulmonary applications.
