Boulder lands spot on Money’s top small cities list

Money magazine on Monday ranked Boulder 23rd on its list of the top 50 small cities in which to live, though Fort Collins, a former fixture of the rankings, was absent.

The rankings included cities with populations between 50,000 and 300,000, using data from Onboard Informatics and factoring in things like median family income, home prices and job growth.

McKinney, Texas, a suburb of Dallas, ranked first, followed by Maple Grove, Minn., and Carmel, Ind.

Castle Rock, at No. 4, was the highest-ranked Colorado city to make the list. Centennial was the other at No. 13.

Boulder was recognized for its outdoors scene, high concentration of skilled jobs and strong schools, though the rankings also pointed out the city’s expensive home prices as a potential negative factor.

Money alternates its Best Places to Live list every year between small cities (50,000 to 300,000 population) and small towns (50,000 or less population).

Fort Collins topped the small cities list in 2006, was second in 2008 and sixth in 2010 before falling to 70th in 2012. This year Money ranked only the top 50 small cities.

Louisville ranked second on the small towns list last year after topping that category in 2011.
