Boulder Community Hospital tops state in safety ranking

Hospitals in Northern Colorado and the Boulder Valley all ranked above 50 points out of 100 for safety in the newest hospital rating by Consumer Reports, released in late March.

Consumer Reports uses different metrics to score hospitals across the country on safety, creating a composite safety score that encompasses avoidance of certain infections readmissions, deaths and other adverse events. Hospitals are scored out of 100, and data are collected across several years, ending in March 2013.

Boulder Community Hospital had the highest score in Colorado, with a composite safety rating of 73, high enough to place it in the top 15 percent of hospitals across the country.

In Colorado, 1 in 3 women, 1 in 3 men and 1 in 2 transgender individuals will experience an attempted or completed sexual assault in their lifetime. During April, we recognize Sexual Assault Awareness Month with the hopes of increasing conversations about this very important issue.

Ratings are adjusted where possible to accommodate for differences among hospital populations, which can mean sicker patients at some hospitals than others, according to Consumer Reports. For example, scores for bloodstream infections and surgical-site infections were adjusted based on where the patients were treated and the type of surgery.

Scores for all hospitals in Northern Colorado and the Boulder Valley are:
Boulder Community Hospital, Boulder, 73
Medical Center of the Rockies, Loveland, 65
McKee Medical Center, Loveland, 65
North Colorado Medical Center, Greeley, 64
Poudre Valley Hospital, Fort Collins, 63
Longmont United Hospital, Longmont, 59
Avista Adventist Hospital, Louisville, 56
