Boulder-based Special Aerospace Services opens office in Alabama

BOULDER — Boulder-based engineering firm Special Aerospace Services has opened a new engineering office in Huntsville, Ala., to capitalize on relationships with space and defense contractors there. And SAS chief executive Heather Bulk said Thursday that more growth is on the horizon for the firm’s manufacturing operations in Colorado.

SAS, founded in 2007, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Monday for its office in Huntsville, nicknamed “Rocket City” for its large aerospace sector. The new office initially will be staffed by two engineers, one who transferred from an SAS office in Florida and the other a new hire.

SAS provides engineering services in the aerospace industry, including contracts to work with companies on NASA’s Commercial Crew program as well as NASA’s Space Launch System. SAS’s services include providing checks and balances for contractors from a safety standpoint, as well as helping contractors navigate and comply with NASA requirements around design.

The Boulder firm on Wednesday was ranked the 1,685th fastest-growing private company in the nation on the Inc. 5000 list produced by Inc. magazine. The firm posted revenue of $8.3 million in 2015, reflecting 221 percent growth over 2012.

The Huntsville office gives SAS nine offices around the country. The company employs just shy of 60 people, including about 45 in Colorado between the Boulder headquarters, an office in south Denver and SAS Manufacturing, a subsidiary of SAS in Englewood.

Despite the new office in Huntsville, Bulk said Thursday that most of the company’s upcoming growth will be focused on Colorado, specifically the SAS Manufacturing operations.

SAS Manufacturing earlier this year secured an AS9100 manufacturing certification that Bulk called “the gold standard” for supplying clients with space and aviation parts. The certification, she said, has led to a major uptick in business on the manufacturing side to the point that the company is hoping to expand the Englewood operations into a new larger location in the Denver metro area by the spring or summer of next year.

“We’re bursting at the seams with both local clients and clients across the nation,” Bulk said.
