Boulder Art Cinema to open at library Feb. 25

BOULDER — A theater that plans to show first-run art and independent films will open Feb. 25 in a 200-seat space attached to the north side of the Boulder Public Library.

Boulder Art Cinema, the result of a partnership announced in November between the library and Downtown Boulder Inc., will operate on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in the library’s Canyon Theater at 1001 Arapahoe Ave. The doors will open at 6 p.m. each night, and the first screening will begin at 6:30.

The opening weekend will feature “Trumbo,” in which the successful career of Hollywood screenwriter Dalton Trumbo comes to an end when he is blacklisted in the 1940s for being a Communist; “Amy,” combining archival footage and personal testimonials to present a portrait of the life and career of British singer/songwriter Amy Winehouse; and “The Danish Girl,” a love story inspired by the lives of artists Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener, whose marriage and work evolve as they navigate Elbe’s journey as a transgender pioneer.

Empowering communities

Rocky Mountain Health Plans (RMHP), part of the UnitedHealthcare family, has pledged its commitment to uplift these communities through substantial investments in organizations addressing the distinct needs of our communities.

Seeds Library Café, which is managed by Boulder County Farmers Markets, will offer a custom menu for movie patrons, featuring locally produced snacks and cuisine, washed down with beers from Boulder-based Avery Brewing Co. and wine from Bookcliff Vineyards.

Downtown Boulder will manage ticket and alcohol sales as well as marketing, in an agreement with the library that was the result of more than a year of discussions.

Tickets will be $11 for general admission and $9 for seniors age 60 and older as well as students with identification.

The Canyon Theater will remain available for library programs and community groups when not being used as the art cinema. Its backers have said that any profits from the cinema would be funneled to other library programs.

Two other venues in Boulder also show art films: the 60-seat Boedecker Theater at the Dairy Arts Center and Muenzinger Auditorium on the University of Colorado Boulder campus, which has an international film series.
