BizWest staff honored in regional media awards

DENVER – BizWest staff members took home numerous awards at the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2014 Top of the Rockies competition. Winners were announced Friday, April 25, at the Denver Press Club.

Entries from BizWest staffers were submitted for their work during 2013 in either the Boulder County Business Report or the Northern Colorado Business Report. The two biweekly newspapers merged last month to become BizWest.

Steve Lynn took first place in the Education: Enterprise Reporting category for “Defense dollars arming CSU research” in the Dec. 27-Jan. 9 NCBR and second place in Business Enterprise Reporting for “Abound Solar panels deemed a hazard,” in the Feb. 22-March 7 NCBR.

WomenGive, a program of United Way of Larimer County, was started in Larimer County in 2006 as an opportunity for women in our community to come together to help other women.

Lynn, Molly Armbrister, Dallas Heltzell and Melissa Schaaf took first place in Business: General reporting for “After the deluge” in the Sept. 20-Oct. 3 NCBR.

Co-publisher Christopher Wood took first place for editorial writing in the Boulder County Business Report.

Former staff member Beth Potter took first place in Business: Enterprise Reporting for “DGI nixed $18 million offer from Longmont” in the Nov. 8-21 BCBR and second place in Health: Enterprise Reporting for “Companies’ perks include free food – and exercise to work it off” in the July 5-18 BCBR.

Armbrister won third place in the Business: Enterprise Reporting category for “Special Report: Foothills Mall interrupted,” in the Nov. 1-14 NCBR and third place in Business: General Reporting for “FDIC moves to retain mineral rights” in the April 19-May 2 NCBR.

News organizations’ entries from Colorado, Utah, New Mexico and Wyoming were evaluated by judges from the San Diego and Hawaii chapters of the Society of Professional Journalists.
