Best Western getting $3.8M makeover to keep pace amid Boulder hotel boom

BOULDER — Owners of the Best Western Plus Boulder Inn have begun the second of a three-phase $3.8 million renovation project to spruce up the 99-room hotel at 770 28th St. in Boulder.

Steven Wallace, Boulder Inn’s general manager, said the renovation that includes a complete redesign, will keep the hotel competitive in an expanding market.

Within the next year, 540 hotel rooms will be added to the city’s existing inventory of 1,728 hotel rooms. New hotels that are expected to open in 2017 include a 172-room Hilton Garden Inn and a 203-room Embassy Suites on the north side of Canyon Boulevard between 26th and 28th streets on the former site of the Golden Buff hotel and Eads Newsstand, plus a 155-room Residence Inn at 26th Street and Canyon Boulevard.

“The improvements enhance the guest amenities, as well as creating a more vibrant look for the neighborhood and the hotel,” Wallace said.

The second phase that has just begun includes implementing the redesign of the exterior of the lobby, conference room building and porte cochère — the porch under which vehicles stop to unload hotel guests.

The third phase will implement the redesign of the exterior of the rooms.

The first phase, already completed, renovated the interior. It included tripling the size of the lobby; converting a restaurant space to a breakfast room for guests; resurfacing the pool area and hot tub room; and installing a new elevator.

Kephart of Denver provided architectural services while Fort Collins-based Brinkman Construction Inc. was hired to transform the hotel.
