Bass Pro Shops pulls plug on plans to build mega-store in Loveland

LOVELAND — Bass Pro Shops has decided not to build a 117,000-square-foot store at Centerra in Loveland.

Bass Pro Shops’ spokeswoman Katie Mitchell said Thursday that the company would not talk about the decision beyond the following prepared statement: “Bass Pro Shops has withdrawn plans to construct a retail store at Centerra. We appreciate the time and effort of the McWhinney organization and wish them well in the future. We believe Northern Colorado is home to many outdoor enthusiasts and sportsmen and we hope to explore other opportunities in the region that more closely align with our expansion vision.”

Loveland-based McWhinney Real Estate Services, which was developing the land at Centerra, issued a statement Thursday saying that “due to unforseen circumstances” Bass Pro Shops would not be building the store at this time.

In April, North Dakota-based sporting goods retailer Scheels said it would build a 225,000-square-foot sporting goods store in Johnstown’s 2534 development, directly south of Centerra.

In December, McWhinney began preparing the 15-acre site with grading and infrastructure work for the store located at the northwest corner of Centerra Parkway and Eisenhower Boulevard in east Loveland. Once the infrastructure was in place, Bass Pro Shops was going to take over development of the store.

It would have been Springfield, Mo.-based Bass Pro Shops’ third mega-size outdoor stores in Colorado. Bass Pro Shops combines retail with entertainment, conservation and outdoor education.
