Area jobless rate up from May to June

BOULDER – While unemployment rates in Boulder and Broomfield counties increased from May to June, they both improved by at least half of a percentage point compared with the same month a year ago, according to a report released Friday by the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.

Boulder County’s unemployment rate was 6.1 percent for the month of June, with 171,730 people employed and another 11,111 looking for work.  That’s up from 5.1 percent in May but down from 6.6 percent in June 2012.

Broomfield County’s unemployment rate increased from 6.4 percent in May to 7.0 percent in June. Broomfield’s rate in June 2012 was 7.7 percent.

Colorado’s unemployment rate ticked up from 6.9 to 7.0 percent from May to June. However, the state numbers are seasonally adjusted, while the county numbers do not reflect seasonal adjustments, which accounts for some of the local rise from May to June.

The number of nonfarm payroll jobs in Colorado increased 11,000 from May to June to 2,368,300, eclipsing the previous peak of 2,363,500 reached in May 2008.

The national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 7.6 percent.

Statewide, Costilla County in southern Colorado had the highest unemployment rate at 13.1 percent, while Hinsdale County in southwestern Colorado had the lowest rate at 2.7 percent.
