Denver’s $937 million bond package gets initial approvals

DENVER —In a preliminary vote, Denver City Council gave the okay to send a $937 million bond package that will pay for hundreds of projects in the city to the voters for approval.

The introduction and first reading of the package of eight bills were unanimously approved, according to the Denver Business Journal. The second reading and final vote are scheduled for Aug. 14. If the vote passes, the public will then have the chance to vote on the bond package in November.

The projects the bond package would go to breaks down into seven categories. Transportation and mobility projects count for 44 percent of the price tag for about $431 million. Parks and recreation would be the next big receiver of funds, with about $152 million slated towards it. Cultural facilities would cost just under $117 million. A new ambulatory center for the Denver Health & Hospital Authority would cost $75 million. Public safety would get about $77 million. The library system would get $69 million. Finally, public facilities would cost about $16.5 million.
