State hires Heung for Outdoor Recreation Industry Office

DENVER — Janette Heung has been hired as the deputy director for the Colorado Outdoor Recreation Industry Office, a division of the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade.

Heung’s first day will be Aug. 10. She will manage day-to-day operations of the office and serve as a liaison in the community. She will be supporting economic development within the industry, working to build a  workforce, advance conservation and stewardship, and encourage the intersection with public health and wellness in the sector. She also will develop initiatives to further Colorado’s outdoor recreation growth.

“Colorado is rapidly becoming the epicenter of the outdoor recreation industry,” Heung said in a prepared statement. “I’m tremendously excited for the opportunities that lie ahead.”

The outdoor industry in Colorado generates $34 billion in consumer spending and $994 million in state and local tax revenue, and the industry provides 350,000 jobs with earnings of more than $4 million, according to the statement.

Heung was born in the United States but grew up in Hong Kong and returned to the states when she became an adult.

Before accepting the deputy director job, Heung was a consultant who specialized in strategic planning and program management with a focus on conservation and health. She has consulted for public, private, and nonprofit sector clients, including Fortune 500 companies, the city and county of Denver, and The Nature Conservancy. Previously, she was a senior management consultant at Deloitte Consulting in the greater Washington DC area.

Heung holds bachelor degrees in physics and biomedical engineering from Tufts University and a master’s degree in environmental health from Harvard University.
