Event to focus on advancement of women in STEM

DENVER — A San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that champions the advancement of women in technology and intellectual property law has opened a chapter in Denver.

Chiefs in Intellectual Property, or ChIPs, will offer a free event April 20 in Denver to formally announce the launch of its newly formed Denver chapter and feature a panel discussion on the advancement of women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM.

Panelists will be Violeta Garcia, Patty Lopez and Melissa Risteff. Garcia is a national leader in STEM, who has created programs for educators and students. Lopez is a senior engineer for Intel, supporter of women in STEM programs and a volunteer for the National Center for Women in Information Technology. Risteff is a co-founder and the chief executive of Denver-based Couragion, which has an interactive app that exposes students to STEM careers through videos, games and self-reflection quizzes.

Exploring & expressing grief

Support groups and events, as well as creative therapies and professional counseling, are all ways in which Pathways supports individuals dealing with grief and loss.

Discussion at the event will include ways to accelerate innovation, provide information about various STEM groups and the volunteer/support opportunities available, encourage women to pursue patent rights for their inventions, encourage school-age girls to take STEM classes, point out opportunities open to those who have STEM degrees and help women build networks.

The event, sponsored by law firm Merchant & Gold, will be from noon to 1:30 p.m., Thursday, April 20, at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, 1961 Stout St., Denver.

Attendees must bring a driver’s license or other form of ID, and allow time for security screening in the USPTO lobby.
