Colorado AG sues Boulder County over drilling ban
DENVER — Colorado attorney general Cynthia Coffman has filed a lawsuit against Boulder County over its series of moratoria on oil and gas drilling. The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Boulder County District Court.
The Denver Post reports that Coffman said Boulder County’s “open defiance of state law has made legal action the final recourse available.”
Boulder County has extended or renewed its ban on oil and gas development eight times in five years, including after a May 2016 Colorado Supreme Court ruling that local-government bans on such drilling are in violation of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Act.
