Plumbing manufacturer Viega plans U.S. HQ in Broomfield

BROOMFIELD — The Broomfield City Council will take a look at plans Tuesday night for the construction of two buildings on eight acres of undeveloped land in the Interlocken business park in Broomfield for Viega LLC, a manufacturer of plumbing equipment.

Viega, based in Germany, plans to move its U.S. headquarters to 575 Interlocken Blvd. from Wichita, Kan., when construction is completed.

The concept-review process allows the applicant to receive comments and direction from the public, city council, and other boards and commissions in order to identify concerns or key issues prior to development of a formal application.

The proposal includes a 51,000-square-foot office building for the HQ, and a second building of 24,000 square feet that will be used as an education facility containing classrooms, workshops, a cafeteria and exhibition hall. The buildings are being designed by OZ Architecture. The first phase of the project is estimated at $25 million, according to city documents. Viega acquired the land in May, plus another four acres next to it at 565 Interlocken, for $8.4 million, according to Broomfield public records. A second phase of construction includes a 30,000-square-foot office building.

Relocation of Viega’s U.S. headquarters will result in the addition of 190 new jobs in Broomfield paying an average annual wage of more than $85,000.

An investment agreement approved in April between the city and Viega will provide rebates for the building use-tax, business personal property tax, and real property tax, totaling approximately $500,000.

Two site-development plans have previously been approved for the property, but neither were constructed. In 2001, the site plan for Interlocken Commons included retail, restaurant and office uses in four buildings, along with two structured parking areas. An amended site-development plan approved in 2008 was composed of a six-story office building, with structured parking and a hotel.
