Camp Bow Wow plans doggy day-care center in Longmont

LONGMONT —  Camp Bow Wow is planning to open a doggy day-care facility in the Diagonal Trade Center in Longmont.

Developer John D. Parker of Diagonal Trade Center LLC plans to build an 8,260-square-foot single-story building on a 1.23-acre piece of vacant land that DTC LLC owns at 801 S. Sherman St., according to documents filed with the city of Longmont’s planning department.

Parker plans to lease the building to Camp Bow Wow, which would operate it as a company-owned center, according to a Camp Bow Wow spokeswoman.

Broomfield-based Camp Bow Wow is a national chain of company-owned and franchise centers. They provide training, grooming and overnight boarding services. This site would include a 1,500-square-foot outdoor space surrounded by an 8-foot tall fence, where supervised dogs can exercise, according to planning documents.

Camp Bow Wow was founded by Heidi Flammang (now Heidi Ganahl) in 2000, when she opened the first Camp Bow Wow in Denver. She began offering franchises in 2003. In 2014, Camp Bow Wow was acquired by Los Angeles-based VCA Inc. (Nasdaq: WOOF), an animal health-care company with more than 700 animal hospitals in the United States and Canada.

There are more than 130 Camp Bow Wow locations and more than 30 in the process of opening, according to the company’s corporate website. There are 16 Camp Bow Wow locations in Colorado, including Fort Collins, Boulder and Westminster.
